Old Transporter Bridge

Nicolas Avellaneda Bridge

This iron structure is also known as "Old Bridge" or "Nicolas Avellaneda Bridge". Built in 1908, this transporter bridge was responsible for connecting the City of Buenos Aires with the Province of Buenos Aires. In between lays the Riachuelo River. Nowadays is not in use. Even today we can see the rowers at the base of the transporter, who join both shores with their boats, most of the time transporting workers.

Boca Juniors Supporters

Boca Juniors is traditionally regarded as the club of Argentina's working class, in contrast with the supposedly more upper-class base of cross-town archrival Club Atlético River Plate.

Boca Juniors claims to be the club of "half plus one" (la mitad mas uno) of Argentina's population, but a 2006 survey placed its followers at 40%, still the largest share. They have the highest number of fans, according to their percentage in their country.

The Boca-River Superclásico rivalry is one of the most thrilling in the world. There were 327 matches; Boca have won 121, River 105 and there have been 101 draws. After each match (except ties), street signs cover Buenos Aires, at fans' own expense, "ribbing" the losing side with humorous posters. This has become part of Buenos Aires culture ever since a Boca winning streak in the 1990's.

Festival Internacional de Teatro de Buenos Aires

From October 5 to October 18

FIBA was born in 1997 as a showcase for the most outstanding expressions of the contemporary performing arts. Local and overseas shows have enjoyed a privileged place at this festival that soon established itself as one of the most important in Latin America.

Every two years this event concentrates the artistic diversity expressed in the new aesthetic quests and the current trends in theatre, dance, visual and sound arts, etc.

Buenos Aires welcomed the great innovators of the theatre and dance scenes for the pleasure of local artists, who had the opportunity to reflect on their own performance, and the general public, who got to appreciate works of the highest quality.

In addition to the international programme, FIBA offered a varied selection of local shows which later made their way into the international scene.

From the very beginning FIBA became a resounding success with sold out tickets for almost all its activities, reinforcing the status of the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires as one of the world’s capitals with the highest theatre activity. In every edition of FIBA we challenge ourselves to keep dazzling the audience and the local artists in order to improve the quality of our performing creations.

Argentine Wine

The most important wine regions of the country are located in the provinces of Mendoza and San Juan and La Rioja. Salta, Catamarca, Río Negro and more recently Southern Buenos Aires are also wine producing regions. The Mendoza province produces more than 60% of the Argentine wine and is the source of an even higher percentage of the total exports. Due to the high altitude and low humidity of the main wine producing regions, Argentine vineyards rarely face the problems of insects, fungi, molds and other grape diseases that affect vineyards in other countries. This permits cultivating with little or no pesticides, allowing even organic wines to be easily produced.

Alfajor

An alfajor is a traditional confection that is found in some regions of Spain and in countries of Latin America including South America, Central America and Mexico. Its basic form consists of two round sweet biscuits joined together with dulce de leche or jam and covered with powdered sugar. In most alfajores there are two layers of cake, and a filling in between.

In South America alfajor is found most notably in Uruguay, Chile, Argentina and Perú. Though the food has been popular in Buenos Aires Argentina, and Uruguay since the mid 19th century, it has its roots in the Middle East. The name alfajor is derived from Arabic, which means "fancy" or "great" sweets. The archetypal alfajor entered Iberia during the period of al-Andalus.

La Boca

This neighborhood was born as the first port of the City, its first inhabitants, most of them italian immigrants, built their houses with wood and zinc and painted them with the left over of the painting of the ships. This colorful custom was kept until our days and it made of la Boca one of the most picturesque places of the City. This neighborhood of artists, tango, and soccer (here is located the famous Boca Juniors Stadium) allows us to appreciate in the joy of its colors the nostalgia of the Porteño.

Mate is served with a straw (bombilla)

Mate is served with a metal straw from a shared hollow calabash gourd. The straw is called a bombilla in Latin American Spanish. The straw is traditionally made of silver. Modern commercially available straws are typically made of nickel silver, called Alpaca, stainless steel, or hollow-stemmed cane. The gourd is known as a mate. Even if the water comes in a very modern thermos, the infusion is traditionally drunk from mates. However, "tea-bag" type infusions of mate (mate cocido) have been on the market in Argentina for many years under such trade names as "Cruz de Malta".
